Minimal Defcon Update
Posted by Steve Hanna on August 12th, 2005 filed in RandomSo, I still don’t have the pictures up yet, I had planned to do a batch update but I still haven’t scoured through the vast amount of pictures. Of course when I say that, I really mean I haven’t drawn the line between offensive and suitable yet, and I don’t want to embarrass myself.
So Parisa did an awesome update regarding Defcon and the activities that took place there. So I will just symlink you to her site if you want to know about the details.
I will make an additional comment regarding my disgust for one of the vendors at the Defcon swag area. This guy was peddling Rainbow Tables which are basically an implementation of Philippe Oechslin’s Making a Faster Cryptanalytic Time-Memory Trade-Off paper. Which as you can see can be generated in a short amount of time on a relatively fast computer. Anyhow, I digress. The point is this bastard was misrepresenting the things he was selling claiming it was the “magic hacking tool”. So, first I told this guy in a completely facetious tone that I had once purchased “all of the ipv4 addresses” and wondered if “all of the ipv6 addresses would be available in the same format?” The problem was that they did not detect my sarcasm and the only thing more annoying to me than going on a lengthy diatribe to dispute some injustice is having to explain my sarcasm to people who are too dumb to understand. So I said, “In case you couldn’t tell, I was being sarcastic, the key space is 2^128″. To which he replied, “Yeah, of course I know that” (the whole time I am giving him a look of incredulity), “what is that, like 80 addresses per person on the planet?” At that point, I realized that I was dealing with impregnable fortress of idiocy. So I just gave a ::blank stare:: and walked away.
